San José, Costa Rica United Nations Latin American Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders
ILANUD was established on June 11th, 1975, in compliance with Resolutions 731-F (XXVII) and 1584 (L) of the Economic and Social Council, ratified by the Congress of the Republic of Costa Rica by law No 6135 of December 7th, 1977. This agreement is supplemented by bilateral co-operation agreements with the countries of the region.

As stated in its foundational charter, the main objective of the Institute is to collaborate with the governments in the balanced econimic and social development of the Latin American and Caribbean countries through the formulation and incorporation into national development plans of adequate policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. The services include research, training and technical assistance in designing and implementing programs and projects in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice.
